Electricity Safety During Rains and Urban Floods
Pakistan is once again witnessing the devastating effects of climate change as intense rainfall and rising river levels have triggered widespread flooding across the country, affecting millions of lives. Cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad are facing severe urban waterlogging, while northern areas such as Swat and Buner have been devastated.
Climate change is making floods in Pakistan more severe and unpredictable. These climate-driven changes increase the risk of deadly floods, making it even more important to practice electricity safety during rains.
Stay Indoors When Possible
During heavy rainfall, the safest place is indoors. Avoid unnecessary travel, as waterlogged streets may hide fallen wires or live currents. Even shallow water can conduct electricity and pose a serious threat. If your must go out, avoid going into flooded streets and find elevated ground.
Avoid Contact With Water and Electrical Appliances
Never touch electrical appliances, switches, or cords when the floor is wet or during rainfall. Keep all electronics elevated above floodwater. If water enters your home, do not attempt to turn off or operate switches. Turn off the main power supply only when it is safe to do so.
Beware of Fallen Power Lines
Fallen or dangling power lines are extremely dangerous. Do not approach, touch, or try to move them. If your vehicle is near a fallen line, stay inside and call for help. Honking or signaling for help is safer than stepping into floodwater.
Say No to Illegal Connections
“Kunda” or illegal electricity connections are common in urban areas. These wires are often exposed and extremely risky during rain. Stay away and report them to authorities rather than trying to fix them yourself.
Take Precautionary Measures
Regularly inspect wiring and avoid overloading circuits, especially before the rainy season. Keep important contacts, like the local electric company and emergency services, handy.
Heavy rain and urban flooding, worsened by climate change, heighten the risk of electrical accidents in Pakistan. Staying indoors, avoiding wet areas, keeping a safe distance from power lines, and securing your home’s electrical system are key steps to protect yourself and your loved ones. When water meets electricity, even a small mistake can be fatal. Safety should always come first.
