Fire raging in grid stations: a new norm in Pakistan

Pakistan witnessing worst power-supply incidents this year. Recurrence of the events related to fire catching the grid stations plunging the cities or villages into the darkness with having high ratio of deaths and injuries, is getting a new norm in the country.

Recently on 18-July-2022, in Hyderabad, a transformer at grid station that supplies electricity in 5 cities Hyderabad, Tando jam, Sultanabad, Tando Allahayar, Mirpurkhaas Haala, and Mitari caught fire. Due to the long distance, fire tenders weren’t able to fetch water on time, reported on Dawn news, 2022

According to the report published by Dawn, 2022 Power cables at 132 KV grid station caught fire near Khoso village on the Larkana-Ratodero road, resulting into immediate power shut in Larkana.

National Transmission and Despatch Company’s mega 500kV Sheikhupura grid station caught fire on Monday, causing loss of millions of rupees as its one of the four transformers and allied installations were completely damaged.

A portion of the grid station caught fire due to sparking in the tertiary winding of one of the four 600MVA transformers. This caused a complete damage in transformer and the parts connected with it.
